It’s always a great day
for sailing!
Club racing forms the backbone of New Zealand yachting.
At Ponsonby Cruising Club we offer a selection of racing options throughout the year.
Here’s an overview of some main events:
Sailing for a prize of rum guarantees a great fleet! We race for 50 weeks of the year starting at 1530hrs standard time and 1600hrs daylight time. This is very social race that does not allow spinnakers or extras.
Our Tuesday evening ladies racing always has a large fleet split into three divisions. This means even novice crews can be competitive and have fun at the same time while more advanced crews can push their skills with spinnakers divisions.
During winter the ladies racing continues every second Saturday.
Both classic yachts and launches come out to parade their grace during a regatta that always attracts a great fleet and plenty of onlookers too.
The classic launches have a log race that creates much conjecture over their declarations and for an enjoyable analysis in the bar after the race.
Since 1920 22 foot Mullet Class boats have raced each year for the Lipton Cup. Today the fleet of lively mulleties flourishes and is well supported by enthusiasts who keep this piece of yachting history alive. The racing is held around the harbour and makes for great spectator viewing.
Sailing around Rangitoto Island in whichever direction the crew thinks is better, adds an interesting dynamic to this passage race.
The computation of wind and tidal influences around the course plays a significant role in winning this race.
What a way to end the working week! A 1815hrs start means it’s easy to escape from work and have a two sail race with your mates. This is on of the club’s best supported race series.
Sail in company to various anchorages around the Hauraki Gulf. In the evening crews gather on the beach or in someone’s cockpit for drinks and eats. The club’s cruising weekends are a great way to explore new spots.
…we’ll see you on the water!
