What a fabulous day and an Awesome Race !
A line up of eight boats set off on a tough course when the gun sounded at 1100 hours on Saturday 17th March 2018 for the 97th Lipton Cup Race.
The Met. Office got the forecast right when they predicted rising winds during the afternoon and the spectator fleet were granted some interesting sights as the gusts came through. It was a tough race in trying conditions especially out at Northern Leading. ‘Rangi Manu’ had to retire due to a problem. Then only minutes from the Finish Line , – a mishap, when ‘Komuri’s’ boom took out ‘Tamatea’s’ forestay. ‘Komuri’ immediately retired and ‘Tamatea’ lost her probable second place when she had to be towed home. A sad result for Trubi and crew after all the hard work getting her ready for the race, but as Trubi said “these things happen”.
Congratulations to Martin and crew of ‘ORION II’ – winners for the second year in succession. ‘Orion II’ hit the front early and stayed there the whole race through. A great effort.
1st on Line and Handicap – ‘Orion II’ – again congratulations to Martin and happy crew above.
2nd on Line: ‘Limited Edition’. Congratulations Ian, Paige and Crew.
3rd on Line: ‘Valeria’. Congratulations Ben and Crew.
4th on Line: ‘Martanza’. Congratulations Tania and Crew.
5th on Line and 2nd on Handicap: ‘Tere Kane’. Congratulations Garry and Crew.
The Lipton Cup is NZ yachting oldest competed for trophy that is sailed for in 22ft (6.7mt) L Class yachts which are commonly referred to as Mullet Boats. Some of the race fleet are now over 100 years old and are still very competitive.
