Adults Keelboat Learn to Sail

The starting point for new sailors.

This course loosely follows the Yachting NZ Learn to Sail syllabus and gives sailors the ability to sail around a course.

This course uses Sonar keelboats. These are a 5 person vessel (4 students + a coach), each sailor will have a chance to learn each role on the sailboat. This course is great preparation for joining a rum racing crew. Completing a second course will be a good step towards boat ownership, cruising, and more competitive racing. Level 1 covers the fundamentals, while level 2 introduces spinnakers and other skills.

We have a maximum of 4 sailors in each boat, and two boats, so we can run two courses similtaneously for your benefit on the water. Each boat will have its own coach, so you will have plenty of time to ask questions etc.

This course is run on two consecutive Saturdays (1000-1600 hrs) or four consecutive Fridays (1600-1900 hrs). If you are super keen but can't make it on Fridays or Saturdays, please contact us.

Use the form at the bottom of the page to register and pay your $50 deposit. We'll let you know when the next available course is. A further $400 can be paid at the berginning of your first session. We will offer you a course starting within four weeks of your registration, or your deposit will be refunded.

Adults Keelboat Learn to Race (Level 3)

This course is for those that already have some sailing experience, or who have completed the Learn to Sail courses.

This course teaches the sailors how to sail faster and introduces racing rules, starts and tactics.

This course uses Sonar keelboats. During competition, these are 3-4 person boats, each sailor will have a chance to master each role on the sailboat. This course is ideal for those who have enjoyed competitions during level 1 and 2 and who might like to take the helm in some club races on their own or someone else's boat. We'll cover fleet racing, match racing, as well as general racing skills needed regardless of format.

We have a maximum of 8 sailors in each course (across two boats), allowing for effective coaching from our coach boat.

This is a 4 week long course with a cost of $495 for non-members.
