YNZ Learn To Sail

Our Yachting New Zealand Learn To Sail Courses are run during term 1 and 4 after school hours (4-7pm). We utilise Optimist, Open Bic, and Splash sailing dinghies depending on the requirements of each sailor.

Students will follow the YNZ Syllabus of Levels 1, 2 & 3 to further their sailing knowledge and will have the opportunity to advance their skill level at the end of the course. YNZ certificates are recognised around the country and are a valuable gauge if moving between clubs or entering coaching clinics.

Students begin at Level 1 from the age of 9 and progress through the levels as completed. An overview of each level can be found on the YNZ website here.

YNZ Adult Learn to Sail

These classes follow the same YNZ syllabus, but with more customisation depending on the current skill levels and goals of the sailors in each group.

This course utilises our Splash single handed sailing dinghies, ensuring our participants enjoy maximum sailing time.

Starting sailing in these boats gives a great understanding and “feel” for sailing as everything reacts quickly compared to a larger boat.

By completing an adult course with PCC you will understand how yachts react to your inputs and will have the confidence to sail on your own.

These skills can be easily transferred into a bigger yacht, or into other dinghies for racing or cruising.

Holiday Programmes

At PCC we offer a holiday course when schools are not running. This course is primarily aimed at enjoying the week and learning a variety of nautical subjects. As well as the physical sailing, students will learn about flags, wind and weather systems, tides and currents and knots (just to name a few), along with enjoying other activies on the water such as swimming and kayaking.

School Groups

We cater for school groups of many sizes, whether it be a one-day introduction to sailing or a week-long course in learning about our marine environment.

If you or someone you know might be interested in tailored programmes for school groups, get in touch with our team via our Expression of Interest form, or email: sailingschool@pcc.org.nz
